Boko Haram killed 110 farmers-united nation

Borno on map used to illustrate the story The United Nations has said at least 110 farmers were killed by Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast. The figure nearly tripled the 43 farmers that were initially reported killed by the insurgents on Saturday.   French newswire AFP cited UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria Edward Kallon as saying on Sunday afternoon that at least 110 people were killed. Earlier on Sunday, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno had admitted more bodies were yet to be recovered from the village where the terrorists attacked rice farmers. The governor led other leaders in Zabarmari to bury 43 bodies that were retrieved on Saturday.   President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attack as ‘insane,’ saying the armed forces had all the resources needed to protect lives and Nigerian territory.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Senator Ali Ndume, who was ordered on Monday to be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja for failing to produce former Chairman, defunct Pension Reformed Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrashed Maina, for who he stood surety. Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, was remanded in the prison custody after the court found that Maina has jumped bail.   In a ruling on Monday Justice Okon Abang granted the application for bail pending appeal, filed by Maina. Justice Abang said he was exercising the court’s discretionary power in favour of Ndume based on his good conduct in the course of the trial of Maina, who is being prosecuted for allegedly laundering about N2billion. just In: Buhari minister gives update on reopening of Nigeria's land borders

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has given a clear hint that the country’s land borders may be reopened soon. The borders that have been closed since August 2019.   But speaking to State House correspondents on Wednesday, Ahmed said the presidential committee set up on the matter has completed its job and has recommended its reopening. She said the committee would soon submit its report to President Muhammadu Buhari, following which a formal pronouncement would be made on the matter. Ahmed however did not reveal when the report will be submitted and how soon the land borders will be reopened.   Nigeria closed its land borders last year, in a bid to curtail illegal importation of drugs, small arms and agricultural products into the country from neighbouring West African nations.

Tragedy:,Hit- and- run driver murdered woman in Onitcha

A hit-and-run driver on Tuesday killed a woman near Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, while she was trying to cross the Onitsha-Awka road, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. Mr Andrew Kumapayi, State Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, who confirmed the incident to NAN in Awka, said that the incident occurred “around 9.20 a.m.”   “According to eye witnesses, the incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. They said the vehicle was  speeding and fled after knocking the woman down. “The vehicle zoomed off, leaving the victim who was rushed to Toronto Hospital, Onitsha by the FRSC rescue team where doctors confirmed her dead,” he said. The FRSC official warned motorists against speed limit violation, urging them to drive safely and stay safe during the ‘Ember’ months.   He also advised pedestrians to be safety conscious when using the road. “The best advice we give them is to always use the pedestrian bridges where available, to avoid accidents,” he said. BREAKING: Tension in ibadan as Agodi prison official,okada riders clash

According to sources and eyewitnesses on the ground, the unrest started after a prison vehicle reportedly knocked down a commercial motorcycle rider, who was said to have died shortly afterwards. There is currently tension in Ibadan, Oyo State, following a clash between Agodi Prison officials and commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as Okada on Tuesday morning. A Delta state businessman and father of five identified as Nelson Ughoh has been killed by unknown gunmen in the state. Nelson who owns a car mart opposite St, Anthony Catholic Church, Airport Road, Warri, was shot dead at around 10.00 p.m on Sunday night.   The assailants reportedly tracked him at the gate of his compound located behind Regent International School, close to Christ Embassy in Jeddo, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. Nigerian Tribune reports they shot him in the head as he drove inside his compound, killing him on the spot and fled the scene. The paper also alleged that before the deceased was killed, one of the gunmen had entered his house and made away with some items suspected to be vital business documents.

A yet to be identified Roman Catholic priest has been abducted in the federal capital territory (FCT). The priest was reportedly kidnapped around Yangoji, a community around Kwali area council in the FCT, on Sunday.   Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the FCT police command said it has launched an operation for the rescue of the priest. Miriam Yusuf, the spokesperson of the command, urged FCT residents to be calm and report any “suspicious movements” they observe. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said that the news making the rounds that it has suspended its eight-month-old strike in Universities, is fake and should be disregarded.   Social media was agog with news on Saturday, November 21 that the academic union had suspended its strike action and will resume academic activities across the nation on Monday, November 23. An emerging report has claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is trying to convince a former president, Goodluck Jonathan, to run for president on its platform in 2023. The report which was carried by This Day claimed that some leaders of the party have been pressuring the former president to consider the offer.   The newspaper stated that a source who spoke anonymously said governors on the platform of the APC who visited Jonathan to felicitate with him on his 63 birthday anniversary, used the occasion to subtly represent their presidential proposal to him. Fashola Traffic The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on Saturday directed trailers parking indiscriminately at Ogere section of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to immediately vacate the area to give way for ongoing construction works. Fashola, who undertook an inspection of the road from Lagos, gave the directive during a town hall meeting with stakeholders at Ogere in Ogun State on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.   After listening to the submissions of tractional rulers, representatives of the three major tribes, civil society, state government officials, contractors and traffic regulatory agencies, Fashola appealed to the trucks to vacate the highway. “My appeal to you (articulated vehicles) is for you to the leave the road today immediately,” he said. Ahmed Taiwo, commander of the 81 division of the Nigerian Army, says Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, was misinformed about the incident at Lekki tollgate. Speaking on Saturday while addressing the judicial panel set up to probe the incident, Taiwo said it is not correct to say anyone died as a result of the shooting at the tollgate.   When he featured in ARISE TV one day after the shooting at the tollgate, Sanwo-Olu had said no one died from the incident. But hours later, he tweeted that he had received information about the death of one person. “Information reaching us now is that a life was lost at Reddington Hospital due to blunt force trauma to the head. It is an unfortunate and very sad loss. This is an isolated case. The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Judicial Inquiry probing the alleged killing of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki tollgate on the night of October 20 on Saturday resumed the viewing of a CCTV footage submitted by the Lekki Concession Company, operator of the tollgate. The footage showed that the scene was calm until about 6.43pm when people could be seen running towards the tollgate from the Oriental Hotel end.   Two minutes later, at 6.45pm, vehicles, with flashing headlights, presumably military vehicles, arrived on the scene. There were no fewer than seven of them. At 6.53pm, about 10 minutes after the arrival of the military vehicles, the tollgate went into a blackout. Two minutes later, at 6.55pm, one of the military vehicles drove through the tollgate to the other end where the crowd of protesters was gathered.   Details later…
